dc.description.abstractother1This dissertation examines the constitution of subjectivity through Gilles Deleuze’s philosophy of cinema, emphasizing the Bergsonian framework that underpins his ontology of the image. It argues that time is not merely a cinematic theme but a formal operator of the image, and reconstructs the shift from the movement-image-organized by a sensory-motor schema-to the crisis that generates the time-image, where action gives way to purely optical and sound situations and the subject becomes a seer rather than an agent. Within this displacement, memory-understood with Bergson and Deleuze as the coexistence (or contemporaneity) of the past with the passing present-ceases to function as a psychological faculty and is instead treated as an immanent structure of reality and of thought. Consequently, the time-image’s “mental theatre” reconfigures criteria of truth, opening the field of the powers of the false: not as relativism, but as the production of new relations of the true under falsifying, non-organic narrative conditions. The dissertation ultimately argues that subjectivity does not precede images; rather, it emerges as an effect of the forms of temporalization mobilized by modern cinema, thereby demanding a corresponding ethics of vision-an apprenticeship in seeing that entails new ways of inhabiting time, memory, and the world
