dc.description.abstractDe Sméagol a Gollum, o desprezível monstro que emite gorgolejos, em Tolkien, nem sempre foi essa criatura mesquinha obcecada pelo Anel do Poder, de Sauron. Gollum, conforme passa a ser chamado após seu domínio pelo artefato, já fora outrora um hobbit dos Grados, em um período que se chamava apenas Sméagol. O duplo Gollum surge somente após ser corrompido por uma ambição desmedida e negativa, que levou o sujeito a cindir-se. Sob essa perspectiva, essa tese objetivou estudar a configuração patêmica da ambição com o intuito de compreender a trajetória de Melkor até o Anel do Poder, culminando na corrupção de Sméagol, que acaba transformando-se em Gollum. Nesse sentido, o Anel do Poder de O Senhor dos Anéis, artefato forjado por Sauron, tem o poder de conceder poderes especiais para seu portador de acordo com sua índole prévia, mas, ao mesmo tempo, também incita a ambição e corrompe o sujeito que o porta. O artefato aqui analisado tem o intuito de dominar e escravizar os Povos Livres da Terra-média. Para tanto, Sauron, o concebeu cindindo parte de seu próprio poder e essência, compartilhando-os com o Anel. Desse modo, o artefato pode ser lido como duplo de seu mestre e também como sujeito, haja vista que o Anel tem vontade própria e atua apenas conforme a perversidade de seu artífice. Assim, com o intuito de analisar como ocorre a ambição por meio do Anel do Poder, Sméagol foi delimitado como personagem escolhida para a análise da ambição pelo artefato. A fim de compreender os efeitos de sentido que constituem a ambição, foram utilizadas, como objeto de estudo, as três obras que compõem a saga do Anel do Poder, de J. R. R. Tolkien: A sociedade do anel (1954), As duas torres (1954) e O retorno do rei (1955). Essa tese foi guiada pela hipótese de que as transformações em Sméagol surgem como consequência do domínio da ambição na personagem, que está em constante conflito com o Anel, pois, dada a constituição do objeto, a personagem nunca o possuiu realmente. Almejou-se identificar não somente a configuração patêmica da ambição no Anel do Poder, mas como ela se constitui, especificamente, em Sméagol e sua relevância para o desenvolvimento, que culmina na cisão do ser com Gollum. Para a validação das hipóteses levantadas, o percurso da pesquisa centrou-se, inicialmente, no estudo da ambição em áreas afins. Por conseguinte, explorou-se as origens desse estado de alma no universo de Eä – mundo mítico em que a trama se passa –, e sua relação com o Um Anel. Além disso, investigou-se a ambição no artefato de Sauron e, por fim, a personagem cindida Sméagol foi estudada com o intuito de compreender como a ambição ocorre no sujeito e quais foram as consequências do domínio passional na personagem.
dc.description.abstractother1Between Sméagol and Gollum, the despicable monster that emits gurgles, in Tolkien, he wasn't always this petty creature obsessed with the Sauron's Ring of Power. Gollum, as he’s called after his domination by the artifact, was once a hobbit of the Grados, in a period just called Sméagol. The double Gollum appears only after being corrupted by an excessive and negative ambition, which led the subject to divide. From this perspective, this thesis aimed to study the pathetic configuration of ambition in order to understand its trajectory from Melkor to the Ring of Power, culminating in the corruption of Sméagol, who ends up becoming Gollum. In this sense, the Ring of Power from The Lord of the Rings, an artifact forged by Sauron, has the power to grant special powers to its bearer according to its previous nature, but, at the same time, it also incites ambition and corrupts the subject who uses it carries it. The artifact analyzed here is intended to dominate and enslave the Free Peoples of Middle-earth. To this end, Sauron conceived it by splitting part of his own power and essence, sharing them with the Ring. In this way, the artifact can be read as a double of its master and also as a subject, given that the Ring has its own will and acts only according to the perversity of its craftsman. Thus, in order to analyze how ambition occurs through the Ring of Power, Sméagol was delimited as the chosen character for the analysis of ambition through the artifact. In order to understand the effects of meaning that constitute ambition, the three works that make up the saga of the Ring of Power, by J. R. R. Tolkien, were used as an object of study: The Society of the Ring (1954), The Two Towers (1954 ) and The Return of the King (1955). This thesis was guided by the hypothesis that the transformations in Sméagol arise as a consequence of the dominance of ambition in the character, which is in constant conflict with the Ring, because, given the constitution of the object, the character never really owned it. We aimed to identify not only the pathetic configuration of ambition in the Ring of Power, but how it is constituted, specifically, in Sméagol and its relevance for the development, which culminates in the split of the being with Gollum. For the validation of the hypotheses raised, the course of the research was initially centered on the study of ambition in related areas. Therefore, we explored the origins of this state of mind in the universe of Eä – the mythical world in which the plot takes place –, and its relationship with the One Ring. In addition, ambition was investigated in Sauron's artifact and, finally, the split character Sméagol was studied in order to understand how ambition occurs in the subject and what were the consequences of the passionate domain in the character.
