| dc.description.abstractother1 | Resistance exercises vary in several ways, such as the number of limbs involved (unilateral or bilateral), the number of joints engaged (multi-joint or single-joint), and the position in which the target muscle is trained (lengthened or shortened), among other factors. However, whether these differences lead to distinct muscular adaptations is little known. This thesis aims to compare the effects of exercise selection on strength adaptations and muscle hypertrophy. Five experiments were conducted, characterized as randomized clinical trials with parallel groups involving young women. The experiments are as follows: 1. Comparison of two exercises targeting the knee ex-tensors: squat (SQ) versus leg extension (LE). 2. Comparison of two exercises for elbow flexors: incline biceps curl (IC) versus preacher biceps curl (PC). 3. Comparison of two exercises targeting ankle flexors: straight-leg (STRA-leg) versus bent-leg (BENT-leg). 4. Comparison of one versus two limbs for elbow flexors: bilateral biceps curl (B-BC) versus unilateral biceps curl (U-BC). 5. Comparison of one (unilateral) versus two (bilateral) limbs targeting the knee extensors: bilateral 45-degree leg press (B-LP) versus unilateral 45-degree leg press (U-LP). In all experiments, train-ing sessions were conducted either twice a week (for the SQ vs. LE and IC vs. PC studies) or three times a week (for the STRA-leg vs. BENT-leg, B-LP vs. U-LP, and B-BC vs. U-BC stud-ies), on non-consecutive days. The primary outcomes analyzed included dynamic strength (1RM and 3RM tests) and muscle size (muscle thickness) of the knee extensor muscles (SQ vs. LE and B-LP vs. U-LP studies), elbow flexors (IC vs. PC and B-BC vs. U-BC studies), and ankle flex-ors (STRA-leg vs. BENT-leg studies). In Experiment 1, greater hypertrophy of the rectus femoris muscle was observed in the LE group, with increases in the proximal (LE = +11.4% vs. SQ = +2.0%, P < 0.001), middle (LE = +12.3% vs. SQ = +5.7%, P < 0.001), and distal (LE = +17.5% vs. SQ = +7.9%, P < 0.001) regions. Conversely, the SQ group exhibited greater hypertrophy of the distal region of the vastus lateralis (SQ = +18.2% vs. LE = +11.2%, P = 0.003) and per-formed better in the 3RM test for the squat exercise (SQ = +46.7% vs. LE = +21.3%, P < 0.001), with no significant differences in the 3RM test for the leg extension exercise (SQ = +19.8% vs. LE = +23.4%, P = 0.824). In Experiment 2, the R-INC group showed greater increases in the proximal region of the elbow flexors (IC = +11.2% vs. PC = +8.3%, P = 0.009) and superior per-formance in the 3RM test for the incline curl exercise (IC = +30.6% vs. PC = +23.7%, P = 0.027). In contrast, the PC group showed more significant hypertrophy in the distal region (PC = +10.3% vs. IC = +6.4%, P = 0.001) and performed better in the 3RM test for the preacher curl exercise (PC = +51.5% vs. IC = +35.1%, P < 0.001). In Experiment 3, greater hypertrophy of the lateral gastrocnemius (+17.8% vs. +12.0%, P = 0.036) and medial gastrocnemius (+6.2% vs. +1.2%, P = 0.003) was observed in the STRA-leg group. However, the BENT-leg group demon-strated a greater increase in muscle strength in the 3RM test compared to the STRA-leg group for the plantar flexion movement with flexed knees (+28.6 vs. +10.5%, P < 0.001). There were no significant differences between the groups in the 3RM test for the plantar flexion movement with extended knees (STRA-leg = +26.8% vs. BENT-leg = +21.4%, P = 0.161). In Experiment 4, a significant increase in the size of the elbow flexors was found, with no difference between the B-BC and U-BC groups (P = 0.370). However, the unilateral 1RM test for the right arm showed greater strength increases in the U-BC group (+34.8% vs. +22.7%, P = 0.006), with no significant difference in the unilateral 1RM test for the left arm (+33.3% vs. +26.2%, P = 0.085) or bilateral 1RM (P = 0.551). Finally, in Experiment 5, significant hypertrophy of the knee extensors was recorded, with no difference between the groups (P = 0.055). However, a greater increase in muscle strength was seen in the B-LP group for the unilateral 1RM tests of both the right (+40.2% vs. +30.3%, P = 0.001) and left (+43.7% vs. +30.9%, P < 0.001) lower limbs, with no differences found between the B-LP and U-BC groups in the bilateral 1RM test (P = 0.393). These results suggest that exercise selection can influence strength adaptations and muscle hyper-trophy in young women. Therefore, exercise prescriptions should be tailored to the specific goals and needs of the practitioner | |
