| dc.description.abstractother1 | Nanoencapsulation of atrazine (ATZ) represents a strategy to increase herbicide activity, resulting in reduced use of the active ingredient, which is desirable given the concern with environmental contamination. However, some factors still limit its large-scale use, such as low active ingredient concentration, lack of preparation of the manufacturing system, and extra synthesis costs. In this study, the effects of combining ATZ nanoformulation with a conventional ATZ formulation (ATZc) on the post-emergence control of Conyza bonariensis and Raphanus sativus and on selectivity for Zea mays were evaluated. Atrazine nanocarriers (ATZnz) were synthesized from zein, a natural polymer originated from corn, by the anti-solvent precipitation method. The treatments, carried out in a greenhouse, consisted of two doses of ATZc (1000 and 2000 g a.i. ha-1), three doses of ATZnz (50, 100, 200 g a.i. ha-1), combinations of ATZc 1000 g a.i. ha-1 with 50, 100 and 200 g a.i. ha-1 of ATZnz, control zein nanocapsules without ATZ (NCz), ATZc 1000 g a.i. ha-1 combined with NCz, and control without application, totaling 11 treatments. The following were evaluated: maximum quantum efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/Fm), chlorophyll index, oxidative stress markers (hydrogen peroxide-H2O2 and malondialdehyde-MDA), electrolyte leakage, biometric parameters (fresh and dry masses), and visual assessment of injury. The data were subjected to ANOVA and compared using the Scott-Knott mean test (p=0,05). The Colby test was also performed to verify synergism between the formulations. The corn assay revealed transient inhibition in Fv/Fm by the ATZ treatments; more pronounced in the ATZc + ATZnz treatments. However, it was no longer detected 14 days after the treatments, which, together with the absence of visual effects, indicates the selectivity of the formulations for the crop. In R. sativus, it was evidenced that the ATZc + ATZnz treatments provided anticipation of visual symptoms, but the sensitivity of the species to the herbicide did not allow a clear observation of the interaction between the formulations. For C. bonariensis, the ATZc + ATnz treatments increased the injury symptoms, especially the ATZc + 200 ATnz treatment, which outperformed the ATZc positive control (2000 g a.i. ha-1). This treatment (ATZc + 200 ATnz) promoted a greater reduction in Fv/Fm, greater accumulation of H2O2 and MDA in the leaves, greater reduction in fresh and dry mass of the aerial part and also greater visual injury. The Colby test revealed that the interaction was additive or synergistic for most of the parameters evaluated. The ATZc + NCz treatment promoted an adjuvant effect for ATZc in C. bonariensis, as it increased its activity, which brings new perspectives for the use of nanotechnology. The results indicate that the combination of ATZnz and ATZc is effective in controlling C. bonariensis and R. sativus, maintaining selectivity for Z. mays. It is essential to understand how the interaction between the formulations occurs so that this strategy can be explored for other active ingredients of interest | |
