| dc.description.abstractother1 | The Antecipe System, in which maize is sown between soybean rows while soybean is still in the reproductive stage, reduces the production cycle and climatic risk for second-crop maize. However, the simultaneous coexistence of both crops intensifies the “green bridge,” favoring the migration of Diceraeus melacanthus. This study evaluated stink bug host preference and damage caused by different population densities, aiming to support management strategies in the Antecipe System. The preference test was conducted under semi-field conditions using cages (1.5 × 0.5 m) containing senescing soybean and maize at the VE stage simultaneously, infested with 10 adults. Evaluations were carried out over three consecutive days at three times per day. The action threshold experiment was conducted in the field in a completely randomized design, with four densities (0, 1, 2, and 4 stink bugs/m) installed in 6 × 4 m cages. When maize reached the VE stage, insects were manually infested, and damage was assessed on three dates. Preference tests indicated a strong predominance of adults on soybean plants, especially during the warmest periods (12:30 and 16:30), whereas on maize the highest activity occurred at 8:30. In the damage experiment, injury levels increased significantly with both density and exposure time. Plants exposed to 2 and 4 stink bugs/m showed the highest damage levels, and yield was mainly reduced from densities of 2 stink bugs/m onward. In this context, even though D. melacanthus initially concentrates on soybean, it can cause economically relevant damage to maize in the Antecipe System, indicating that densities equal to or greater than 1 stink bug/m already require attention in management decisions | |
